Description: I was shocked to see that the authorities who make up these uncivilized rules against women allow filming of these proceedings. It was a relieve though to see some of these women are fighting the system despite the road blocks they face constantly. You can easily see the sense of victory on the face of the woman who came to the court with her two boys, complaining about her husband not coming home and not providing her financial support, once the judge mediated and made the husband obey his wife's conditions. A very good documentary about what goes on behind the closed doors of Iranian divorce courtrooms. (A user's comment from imdb)

Description: Adopting her usual objective approach to femme-centered subjects in foreign cultures, British documaker Kim Longinotto lets her subjects do the talking in "The Day I Will Never Forget," an unblinking study of female circumcision in Kenya's Somali community.
Though now illegal in Kenya, the long-established tradition of clitorodectomy and stitching (described in precise detail by one circumciser) is still common among Somalis. Practice is strongly defended by many of the womenfolk as re-balancing the differences between the sexes by removing femmes' vestigial male member. A Westernized doctor, Fardhosa, is shown patiently trying to re-educate her brethren (partly on health grounds), while -- in the docu's rather diffuse second half -- a young runaway leads a landmark court case against her parents' attempts to have her circumcised. Clash between Western and traditional values is never far from the surface, though debates are conducted in a disarmingly non-confrontational way. Longinotto secured privileged access, even filming an actual operation (from a discreet distance) in one family's home.
